Thanks! After seeing so much talk about the EFC that was actually the first thing I looked for. Unfortunately, it's 35" tall, which is actually taller than the one he already has. I'm concerned that if he's on a perch near the top and has a seizure or similar episode, he could fall and seriously injure himself. So I'm looking for something shorter, maybe half the height...

Most days he spends out of the cage either sleeping or preening, and either on my shoulder or on the keyboard of my laptop. Don't get me wrong, when he's out of his cage he flies around and gets exercise, but when he's in his cage he doesn't do much other than preen, sleep, eat, or cuddle up with his favourite toys. Now and then he'll chase a ball around, but it's rare. He sleeps across the top of his happy hut (never goes inside (grin)), which is secured to the top of his cage, so short of filling up the bottom half of his cage with towels or blankets, I'm not sure what I could do to make it safer for him. Two feet is a pretty long drop if he falls from his happy hut or one of the higher perches...

Your little guy is a little charmer, isn't he? Love the picture with him peeking out from your hair.

I don't have any suggestions about the cage you're looking for, but one thing in your post caught my eye. ((The bottom grate doesn't come out and though there's a removable tray below, the grate itself gets covered in poop.))

My budgies' cage also has a grate, and I quickly learned to put a layer of newspaper down on top of the grate. Without the paper layer, the poops didn't really fall thru, just the seeds, etc.. I just remove the top layer of paper every day to get rid of the poops. Then remove and clean all paper and the tray once or twice a week. (tray still catches seeds from edges of cage). Alot of people on my budgie mailist do this.

:)

That's a great tip. Thanks! Perhaps until I find something new I'll do that. I see that they make stands for that model so it could be a cheap short-term solution. For all I know I'm asking too much from a cage and I won't find anything better than what I've already got. :)

Other than going in person to WC Tropical and seeing what they have, I can't actually think of any other reasonably sized low cages. Which honestly sucks, because a lot of birds really prefer wider cages rather than taller cages.

Platforms and things like that may help, but....

He's a cutie though. :)

Thanks Bloolark. I think you live relatively near me. Do you shop anywhere else in particular for cages?

I'll have a look at WC Tropical next time I'm on that side of the city.

Bloo moved East. She's now an Easterner. ;) Cheaper real-estate, colder weather.

The woman who runs the store is INSANELY knowledgeable. And they always have discounts of a variety of things, so you may even get a deal. She can pretty much get you anything you want.

Lovely day we had today, no??

It was a beautiful day! :)

Yes, the lady there is very friendly. We've picked up our last two cages from there and we were very happy with them.

have you considered any of the shorter but longer cages like they use for hamsters? Something with a deep bottom that you could fill with paper bedding that could absorb a fall well? It would not be very tall but would be much longer if you chose the right cage.

this one or one with the proper bar sizing as I have not checked the spacing just looked for a cage similar to what I was trying to describe.

Or a cage like this I have used for handicapped birds and as a hospital cage for birds as small as parakeets.

Neat, I hadn't considered those options, but I'll definitely keep an eye out. That may be a particularly good option if his cataracts get worse. So far he's shown no signs of blindness. Thanks!

This seems a bit on the small size for a lovebird, but maybe it would do for you- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+10346+11771&pcatid=11771
they have quite a few things I think that are what you are looking for. (and i love drs foster and smith. i have personally ordered from them, including ordering a cage)

I think the last time I was at my local store I saw something like that. I'll have a look next time I'm there. Thanks!
