Dat Flowchart

Four other people on your f-list have probably linked this by now, but I'm stepping up to bat anyway.

This is a flow chart for determining whether female characters are well-written/worthwhile or not. Now I will tell you why this chart is bad ( Read more... )

fandom, feminism, sexism

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Having seen that chart, I'd picked up on a lot of the same flaws that you'd noticed (especially the bit that essentially dismisses every female character who isn't a protagonist as weak, wtf). You put it in way more coherent words than I could have possibly managed, though.

...hmmm, doing this for male characters would be fun, but difficult. I'd be up for it if I could get help.

Probably wouldn't be so hard, you just use this one as a template and come up with appropriate counterexamples. You could probably get the ideas for it with a Dbrainstorm.

Good thought! My biggest problem would be making the shiny graphic for it, likely.

It would be nice to see someone put together one of these for male characters, because it would almost definitely be just as exhaustive.

I'd love to see that. I don't, however, have the fandom knowledge to do it myself.

> Does she get pregnant?
>> Yes

> Is she a teenager?
>> No

> Then she needs a man.

At which point you're taken back to the 'is she mainly a love interest?' option. There is so much wrong here I don't even know. (And that's without even pointing out that you can't get to the pregnancy question without passing through love interest. Does the flow chart think it's correcting me?)

There's sort of. Much too much to even take apart. It's messed up in so many ways.

excuse me Peach had her own game and got shit done in that apparently

This is a ridiculous hart, the creators could have at least provided an example of who they think is a strong female character.

Now I hope a male version eventually does surface, and that it's just as unforgiving.

Personally I like characters that represent ideas.
