Same old same old

So last night the tenants of one of the new state houses next to us turned their music on. We’ve met them a few times - a nice lady and her kids - so Steve went over to politely ask if they could turn it down. It was the lady’s scummy boyfriend (why do women countenance such dropkicks?) sitting there with the door open and the stereo blasting. ( Read more... )

You have my deepest, most heartfelt sympathies.

Can I make a couple of radical suggestions?

1. If the sale does not go well, move out anyway, and rent your place to someone else, some young couple who are noisy themselves. Live somewhere else, perhaps with your parents, and use the rental income to work up to the next mortgage.

2. Contact your MP, the local council, anyone you know who might care to publish a story about the issue generally (Noise Neighbours Affect House Prices!) and start making lots of 'noise' yourself, in a political sense, until someone officially cares.

You're right, and we are so grateful that mum and dad are right there any time we want to move in. We've decided to drop the price by ten grand, give it till the middle of December, and if it hasn't sold by then, move in with mum and dad. Then we'll give the keys to an agent and just tell them to get rid of it. I'm itching to make some noise, as you say, (and I'd only need to walk down the hall to do it) but am worried about a couple of things. Firstly, once we do that we'll have to be interviewed, maybe go to court via HNZ, and once we do that our privacy is gone. The only good thing at the moment is being able to complain to HNZ without the tenants knowing who we are. We've seriously been thinking about renting it too, but then we'd have to be landlords and wouldn't be able to buy another place anytime soon. We're trying to be sensible about it, but also don't want to reach breaking point before we act. Thanks for your concern, I know that you understand more than most!

This should by no means deter you from coming to stay next week! We'll be out lots of the time anyway!

We agree with that last advice. Come and live with......That is, go and live with your mum and dad, then take the neighbours to the tribunal at the same time as listing with an agent. It's time to move on!
