NC,G makes me do a double-take and then chuckle; BB is more of a "WTF?" effect. So yes, the former is much better. (A girl scout story - well, you've written Slayer stories, so it seems a natural transition to me. An army of GS out to sell Thin Mints is a formidable thing!)

I'm also leaning toward leaving out "The" in the space opera story, especially since Beowulf is the ship's unofficial name; like the old PT boats of WWII, the Beowulf is a class of small patrol ships that nobody thought were important enough to give names to. I'm having a lot of fun with my eclectic crew.
