This afternoon to the British Museum to see Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan, which is lovely - well worth the seeing.

Thoughts:

The far less rigid art/craft division that seems to be part of Japanese culture.

The combination of traditional forms and techniques with more contemporary techniques and themes.

Sadly, a lot of the traditional Japanese textile arts have fallen by the wayside in the last decade, since kimono-wearing has given way to mass-produced Western clothing.

There was a wonderful shop in Berkeley for many years called Kasuri Dyeworks that sold high-end Japanese fabrics and traditional garments, which closed about three years ago because they're just not made any more. I very much treasure the things I brought home from there, even if there's not much call in my life right now for heavy silk haori....

Magic Pony in Toronto held an exhibit last year of modern kimono; some references to how a lot of kimono "rules" date only to the last century.
