[Subject] is on the periphery of the kind of stuff I do, and I consider myself reasonably well-informed about the state of the scholarly art relating to it.

This sounds like a job for your list's FAQ! If a question comes up regularly and has a fixed answer, then the FAQ should address it, to avoid exactly the looping and its effects that you are experiencing.

If only people read the FAQs! - which they don't alas. There was even a thread on the list once about the most FAQs, and I think the winner was actually 'how do I unsubscribe/get off this list?', as opposed to the various recurrent academic topics.
