Hey- I'm finding a decent number of hotels in the 50 and up range on expedia. The first few I saw seemed to be too far out of the way (I found this summer that it made a BIG difference when the hotel was near the city center), but I'm intrigued by the Ashley at $63/night. It seems to be near Hyde Park and a 2 minute walk from Paddington Station. I don't know much about London, but that sounds right to me. Pay attention to customer complaints- I usually avoid hotels if people complain about safety, being too far away, or noise. But complaints about conditions and cleanliness don't really phase me, I mean, that's why they're budget hotels, right? It looks like most of the complaints about the Ashley are about small bathrooms, and it being "shabby", which sounds worth the $100/night savings.
LOL! Wanna come with me? That sounds pretty good. My biggest concern is location, I would rather just be able to walk outside and be in London than worry about finding my way in. When I went with my parents a few years ago, we actually just flew in and then found a hotel and stayed in a bunch of different ones that were really just old converted row houses. Like you said, I don't really care about the amenities offered, I'm not going to be in the hotel that much! I just want to feel safe leaving my stuff there and finding my way back in the evening.
We just might go to England this year too, and most likely Wales (husband wants to see his grandfather's hometown again, and I want to do a Torchwood tour of Cardiff, and I hope hear some genuine live Welsh singing.)
