I feel you, re: hostels. I've never stayed in one because I just know myself… It's not worth the money you save to sleep in a room with five strangers. I feel the same about B&Bs, too - I just want to be left alone.
We did a VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) for our honeymoon and rented a cabin, which was really nice. The owners had a big chunk of land and build a cabin in the woods a ways behind their house so you drove in, stopped by their house for the keys, and then drove up to the cabin. So, total isolation but you could get to them in an emergency.
I am debating doing an AirBnB if we go to Ireland or Scotland. My friend at work has done this a few times now and she and her husband always seem to have a so much fun. I can deal with the idea of the AirBnB when it is a separate living space, not sure I'd be comfortable in someone's basement.
I went with my family when I was a kid, like 10 or 11. I don't remember much except that they must have just opened the casino and my aunt wanted to check it out so my parents went with her and I have this memory of sitting outside with my grandma waiting for them so we could start the drive home LOL.
The only real variable will be the weather, but we have sweaters we can wear if things get too chilly. :) Can't wait! I promise a full report when we get back!
I'm the same way - I love the anonymity of hotels. I can show up whenever I want and don't have to talk to anyone. B&Bs or even AirBNB just isn't for me. I also go through the same self doubt with reviews. Have a great time in Boston!
The mister and I stayed at a B&B once and realized we are NOT B&B people. We like our privacy and not having to eat with strangers. We're both super sarcastic and having to keep that in check is wearing.
