I've never been, but my parents went a couple of years ago. They had a really awesome time in the nature reserve type places (saw lots of animals, got pretty close to a few), but they did have some complaints about infrastructure -- bad roads, one or two times they were stopped by random people collecting 'unofficial' "tolls" to pass through or park in a public place, and they had trouble finding their AirBnB because of the lack of street addresses, and also ended up not having hot water at the AirBnB (something temporarily broke, which can happen anywhere, of course, but didn't get fixed during their stay). The animal pictures they brought back were awesome, but everything else decreased my desire to visit myself quite a bit. (And I should say, my parents are fine with roughing it -- they still go camping and are totally fine with spare cabins and such. So it wasn't that they had their expectations set on luxury.)

But they went on their own. I imagine if you do it as part of an organized tour, you avoid all or most of that stuff.

Hm, good to know. My friend's husband does a lot of traveling she is planning on stealing his Marriot points to get us a free hotel. Not sure if we would drive ourselves around or see if the hotel had organized excusrsions...might be the way to go based on your parent's experiences!

I think if you stay in a hotel and stick to organized excursions, you'd be able to avoid dealing with most of this, yep! The really neat things, like a nature reserve that you have to take a tiny plane into, you have to do as an organized trip anyway, with a guide.

The other similar trip they did, which they enjoyed even more, was Belize. That one had no weird experiences (although they did also do it via a resort rather than AirBnB, and it was longer ago.)

We went in .... 2014 I think? It was fabulous! We stayed on the pacific coast, near Quepos. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Fabulous wildlife - the birds are amazing!

Isla Nublar, the (fictional) island Jurassic Park happened on, is off the coast of Costa Rica! Maybe you could spot some dinosaurs. ;)
