What confuses me (ok, it doesn't really confuse me since I know it's all political bullshit) is how Russia can say it's all cool to the Georgian republics that want to go separate ways but not cool to the Serbian ones (or their own) that want to do the same...and why nobody's publicly calling them out on this. You can't have it one way for one set of people and another for another...

Oh wait...as long as you have a permanent seat on the Security Council, you can do whatever you want...my bad.

It'll be interesting to see what the Basques and Catalans in Spain do with this...as well as anyone else who wants to try and use this judgment to call independence.

i think part of it is the idea that there are orthodox holy areas in kosovo and they used to be in serbian land (serbs are mostly orthodox), and now they're not as it's now kosovar....fighting over religion was a major cause of the jugoslav war....

*nods* I understand that and it's a shame nobody seems willing/able to make arrangements for access to those areas, but it just seems as if Russia (and other countries) is trying to pick and choose which times/places to support. What should be good for one country should be good for another, even if it's inconvenient for Russian interests...

I'm not saying I'm for or against Kosovar (or anyone else's) independence; I don't know enough about the issues involved. My concern is with Russia supporting independence on the one hand for Abkhazia and Sth Ossetia in Georgia and the Trans-Dniester in Moldova and not supporting independence in Kosovo. They are seen as 'breakaway' regions by their respective...countries...for whatever reasons they chose to pursue independence.

If it's purely for religious reasons, then...idk. We already can see how well access arrangements work in Israel/Palestinian territories, as in not... *sighs*

i understand what you are saying.

i'm personally for kosovar independence since the kosovars are different from serbs culturally/religiously and they don't seem able to get along in one country.

I just hope they'll establish peace once and for all instead of persecuting Serbs who still live there. An eye for an eye leaves us all blind. :\
