“history had demonstrated the absurdities to which man descends when he excludes God from the horizon of his choices and actions.”

Because history shows how very peaceful Europe used to be, when everyone was religious. Oh, wait...

LOL MTE. In fact, I dare say that there is usually more trouble when religion is involved...

the need to mend “the breach between science and religion

LOL, good luck with that.

the pope emphasized that Europe had been deeply shaped by its Christian roots

Oh yes. Completely. I agree. People still point to the Dark Ages, the Inquisition, and the Crusades as "see what happens when the religious nuts get into power?"

allowing a modern-day preoccupation with reason to cancel out faith

WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT HERE, YOU THINK-FOR-YOURSELFER? Just belieeeeeeeeeeeeeve, and that'll make everything okay. Remember, global climate change is because of God, too. Everything that happens? God. Why bother using your brain? Just have faith. :D

He also underlined the need to mend “the breach between science and religion.”

If that's so fucking important to him, maybe he should stop trying to tell scientists and other academics what to do. Oh, and lay the fuck off of secularism. Science will never be religious again and he needs to get the fuck over it. If religious people would do those two things, it would go a long way towards mending the "breach".

Oh wait. He just means scientists need to crowbar God into their theories so he has better job security. NVM

Honestly, faith is believe without or despite evidence, how can you reconcile that with science, where nothing is accepted without evidence? These two basic ideas are polar opposites.

Even more fundamental than that are the differences of opinion about the nature of the universe. Religion (usually) sees the universe as spiritual, subject to the whims of gods and spirits. Science sees it as naturalistic and materialistic, the result of natural, physical processes. You're not gonna reconcile two completely opposite ideas about what the world is.

Edited for spelling fail. Damn iPhone.
