But if he goes now, where will we get our saucy e-mails from? Where will the laughs come from? I'd love to know what crossing lines with women but not having sex actually means - did they play noughts and crosses together? But he does need to resign quickly, any integrity he had is gone with the wind across the Applalachian trail (I'm using up all the Sanford jokes while I can.)

I think Sanford is a total tool, but this is a State issue, not a Federal issue.

The article is referring to members of the SC state Senate. I had to backtrack and check for myself.

I don't normally think that a politician's love life has any relevance to his ability to hold his political office, as long as it doesn't affect his ability to carry out the duties of that office. In Sanford's case, his infidelities clearly have affected his ability to do his job. The man left the country for almost a week to see his mistress, without leaving his subordinates any way of contacting him or placing the Lieutenant Governor in charge during his absence. If your average retail cashier pulls a no-call, no-show, they're usually fired, and there's a lot more responsibility associated with being a state governor than a cashier. It's irrelevant whether his indiscretions make him an inadequate "moral role model" or whatever, but it is relevant whether he is capable of balancing his personal issues with the duties of his office, without the latter suffering for it. So far, the answer to the that one seems to be that he can't.

Sanford is so incredibly self-absorbed it blows my mind. he is talking about his tragic, romantic love, saying he somehow knows older people watching him and Maria knew it was true love, how he is in some sort of Byronic pain - basically, fuck everyone else, I am having feelings.
