An Essex county council spokesman said the local authority would not comment on ongoing cases involving vulnerable people and children.

Presumably because that would be an invasion of privacy?

I would not be at all surprised to find out that the child was given to someone who was well-connected and on an adoption waiting list.

Well, and not to mention: this woman has family in Italy who likely would have/could have taken the infant until the mother was recovered enough (or whatever) to care for her child herself. It seems like all the "authorities" involved should have recognized this fact.

I know when my ex-husband and I first found out we were pregnant, we amended our wills to include giving guardianship of our child to my sister, should something happen to the both of us where we were incapacitated or unable to care for the child once s/he was born. It seems logical to think this woman may have had something similar, and that the authorities should have checked into ALL possibilities. Geez.
