Hobby Lobby owner David Green notoriously sued the government (which is still being challenged)* because he doesn't want to cover birth control for his employees-who, like his shoppers, happen to be mostly women

so, cool story, broalicebluegown16October 2 2013, 13:45:58 UTC
My mother once tried to buy Hanukkah decorations there.
They looked at her like she asked where the kiddie porn was and the manager informed her "We don't sell that sort of thing. This is a CHRISTIAN STORE!!"
She very loudly yelled "Whattya mean you don't sell to Jews!!!"
Everyone in the place heard her and stopped and stared.
The manager looked like he was going to have a heart attack.
She told this story to every single teacher she knows who buys their supplies there.
And all her friends from her crotchet guild.
All of them have since boycotted.
Over ten years ago and she still has never set foot in one of their stores.
And as an avid craft person they are losing a ton of business from her.
This was in Texas.
I never knew until later that this was a national policy and that the CEO was such a fundie nut job.
Of course the funniest thing is that my family is Episcopalian and mom was only buying the decorations for a friend's daughter...
It's one thing to not carry something because you don't have (or believe you have) people who would want to buy it. It's quite another to exclude items because they are not 'Christian.'
Aren't fundies always talking about JudeoChristian values (though frankly, I want nothing to do with their values) and quoting the Jewish bible (incorrectly) to justify their hatred of GLBT people and others?
I personally have never, ever understood why a good deal of Christians have such a hate-on for the Jews. It's like... some on, guys, Jesus was a Jew (who also wasn't white, but that's another matter entirely), Jews have been doing the whole God thing way longer than Christians have, they kinda know more about the so-called Old Testament than we do, so why treat them like they're "filthy heathens" or whatever?
EDIT: I should specify I'm talking about American Christians here, since I don't know how those outside this country feel towards those of the Jewish faith.
Either they think we killed their savior, or along with other Christians, we're damned because we haven't been 'saved' or they say they like us until we tell them "Jewish Bible (aka Old Testament), you're doing it wrong.
See, I don't get that first bit either. Because it was obviously the Romans who were responsible, and that aside, it shouldn't matter because Christians believe Jesus had to die or else his life wouldn't have served the same purpose in the slightest.
Well, you can't force people to carry non-critical merchandise.
Which means they should go out of business in that area relatively quickly since they set up a store in an area with a huge Jewish population and have decided not to stock items that population wants.
The owner of Hobby Lobby sounds like a nut job. I read his open letter and I wanted to rage. They don't want to take on the ACA because then they will offer contraception to their employees.
Hey, ass clowns guess what? You're paying your employees a paycheck every week/month/whatever. The money you pay your female employees with is more than likely going to the pharmacy to purchase their contraception.
Few things frustrate me more than people being willfully obtuse about how insurance works to further their personal agenda. They act like they are personally paying for employees healthcare, when what they are really doing is paying another company to pay for healthcare expenses. So unless the insurance companies they used did not offer any subscribers (corporate/gov't/individual) birth control coverage, they have already been paying for birth control.
Unless they want to be completely self-covered, meaning that all their employees doctor bills come to them to be paid, there is no way that they could have managed this. Therefore they are choosing now to make 'and ideological stand' because they don't like the politics of the President/Congress/etc.
