[for Steve] dead angry sidekicks

It's been months since Bucky's pulled on this uniform for a purpose rather than the inevitable result of a restless night, but that's not the reason he finds himself uncomfortable under the weight of the flag. With yesterday's looped nightmare forever a burden on his mind, the alcohol not enough to dull the memories, regardless of how much he ( Read more... )

I'm at the ready before I realize who it is, footlocker kicked open, half crouched and the closest thing I have at the ready, which happens to be my original shield. Photographs have gone up on the wall, drawings and old newspapers, but I left the shield in the hidden bottom compartment.

I don't know why.

The image this creates is jarring, by virtue of the fact that the intruder is Bucky, in costume, carrying The Shield. I straighten up, dropping the metal badge and setting it, stripes down, back in the footlocker, my eyes never dropping from Captain America.

"...could be asking you the same thing," says Bucky, caught short as he eyes the destroyed remains of the bar upon entering the room. All things considered, however, it's not too surprising a sight. He delayed the inevitable last night, but Steve's been left to his own devices for a day since then; there was always going to be some casualties, though better the bar than some unsuspecting soul's face.

Batman's unlikely to be an unsuspecting soul, at least.

Shaking off the unhelpful train of thought, Bucky points at Steve with a gloved hand.

"Never mind," he adds in a rush. "Suit up. I'll explain on the go."

I frown but move immediately down the hall to retrieve the sparse tactical wear I used in Rapture. I get my boots on first and am back to the front of the house, still pulling the black, long sleeved under armour on as I rejoin Bucky.

"Let's hear it."

"Jason's dad showed up down in Rapture and surfaced about forty minutes ago," Bucky starts, waiting for Steve about a second longer before he starts outside. "Natasha was manning the door, but she could only delay him long enough to determine that there was likely no altercation between father and son-- But Jason's still MIA underground."
