Premature, perhaps, but I need to get this out or be stuck in stunned silence forever.

The new GW novel's prologue has come out, and info is leaking all across the net. Apparently the writer (Mr Sumisawa) thought the following would make a good welcoming message. (Quote below is from a translation of this summary of what was in the magazine, done by kaijyuu_m. See more here. And just a little more here, translated by Deacon Blues of Zeonic ( Read more... )

NO. NO, SIR.

STOP RIGHT NOW.

IF YOU WANT TO TRANSITION TO A GOOD SEQUEL, SCRAP EVERYTHING YOU HAVE PLANNED ALREADY. this is such fucking bullshit. if you don't know wtf you're doing, just admit it and say you want to play in the sandbox. that's all you have to do, really.

So I'm the only one who took that as, "I've put a lot of thought into this sequel business and had fifteen years to hone my skills, and now people are waving money in my face, so let's put all the things I thought of to the test"? Instead of, you know, an ABSOLUTE WORST CASE SCENARIO like "I'M PULLING THINGS OUT OF MY ASS AS I GO LIKE A MINDLESS PRETEEN TEEHEEHEE"?

there are a plethora of writers who have been in the business for ages and have stayed the same or gotten worse. so fifteen years to hone skills is relative. some people actually DO grow as writers, and some don't. given the information we've been presented with, I find it had to believe he has really grown at all.

secondly, saying you're writing a novel to transition to a sequel, WHEN THE NOVEL IS A SEQUEL, is bullshit. he just doesn't know what he's doing with it, and he only mentioned that he has thinking about Treize as far as writing secondary sources. I don't see at all where he has put in actual thought into this plot. (characterization, perhaps.)

Long story short: you're harshing my squee.

Long story long: I know you feel pessimistic and sceptic about these developments. You know I don't. When it became clear in your last post that your stance on the matter is, more or less, Do Not Want Any Of This, I decided not to bug you about it any longer and withdrew from the discussion. If you want to condemn this entire project from the get-go based on nothing but a summary of a prologue, you are prefectly within your right to do so. But I would like to ask you not to do it in my journal. Thanks in advance.

GW was never a very murderous canon. If the general atmosphwere and outlook of it stays the same, I don't think we have much to worry about when it comes to our beloved characters being doomed to neverending misery. *knocks on wood*

Even the most lousy sequel could not make Dorothy Tiberius Catalonia anything ELSE than Madam President Awesome. ;3

I am not going to consider the likelyness of it yet at this stage, but I like that theory. XD But you know what I keep thinking? Even if Duo is a real priest now, why would that stop the 2xH ship? They're two to three hundred years into the future. Even now, there's a lot of talk about loosening or abolishing celibacy. By the time of AC 195, celibacy might be just as outdated as virgin sacrifices. :P

My first knee-jerk reaction was OMGMOREGWCANONYAAAAAAAAAAAY! (And it still is, really. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE AFTER ALL THIS TIME WE GET NEW GW MATERIAL! :DDDDD)

Me too. I keep being hit with random flashes of OMGEXITEMENT. *_*

After all, Sumisawa hasn't written in the Wing verse for a long time, and he's right about one thing--it already was fully concluded. By experience, I've found that most writers in this situation seem to lose touch (and focus) of said verse either because they're forcing the story or they just don't see it anymore, and the novel/series/comic/whatever as a result ends up turning into quasi-crack.We can only wait to see what happens. But I feel reassured by the fact that he acknowledges the situation for what it is. He's approaching this project from an angle pretty similar to ours when we write fic, really, and what he says here makes me think he understands how we feel (either as writing or not-writing fans). It creates a kind of kinship, and a sense of, the better you understand something, the less you can ( ... )

It creates a kind of kinship, and a sense of, the better you understand something, the less you can hate it.Wow, I never thought about it like that! Now I see what you mean, though, and it definitely bears considering. I really like that he's going back to the verse--it must mean he believes it worth expanding, which is total yay--and I'm hoping that as he gradually susses things out and gets his Wing boots back on, maybe he'll fall in love with the characters again just like we did, and then... well, I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but I'm still hoping another anime occurs. Or at least more novels in the future. :D ( ... )

YOUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED :DDDD

Since it's been so long, many fans are already well set in their ways, myself included...

This is probably one of the reasons a lot of people are going OH HELL NO. They've had FIFTEEN YEARS to develop and tweak and cement their post-canon ideas and head!canons and whatnot, and now... all that's going to be mowed over by this sudden appearance of new canon. XD I guess I'm lucky that I was never able to write long future!fic, or I'd probably be in the same boat.

I do find it really interesting that there are many Wing fans who don't acknowledge the other Gundam shows/verses, but there are so many of them...

Ahaha, YES THERE ARE. It's taken me months - nay, years - to get through all the gundam I've read and watched up until now, and there are still two entire universes I haven't even started on! @.@ I must say, though, that watching all those older installments has been remarkably helpful for my understanding and appreciation of GW. G Gundam in particular has been very helpful in creating a ( ... )

Okay I know this post is old but I've been reading through some of yours after finding your big list of GWing fanart links post. Which OMFG thank you for that BTW. <3

Reading this made my hyperventilate juuuuust a bit. While I admit I'm a little cautious about the new canon (because as you put it we've all had 15 years to come up with our own head canon for GWing) I also have to say I've started to like it more and more as I've read developments on the Gundam wiki and seen the art. I mean, some stuff is typical anime drama but other stuff is just so squee-tastic.

And this! OMG if GWing has as much behind it as the original Gundam?! Wow, just WOW. I've loved Gundam Wing for so many years and it's never left me (especially the amazing characters) so this is all really flooring considering I just expected GWing to keep dwindling out of most peoples memories as time went on.

Um anyway I was hoping you wouldn't mind me adding you as a friend? GWing is my all time fav anime but we also have Harry Potter and A:tLA in common as fandoms. :
