This is obviously the Midnight War riff on the venerable Jungle Lord genre. Instead of the hero having an assistant lion, tiger, Great Apes, parrots, sabertooth etc., our guy pals up with a Griffin.
Duran is mentioned a few times in various stories but he only actually shows up onstage in the 1934 "The Slave Makers," in which he is in Manhattan helping the Monk. This is the first time we see him in his element. The Eldar prince is normally much more imperious and unlikeable than he acts here. Maybe the presence of visitors made him behave better. As to why he has no long-term memory, there IS a reason. If he recovers his memories from long ago, disastrous consequences will follow (Ominous Music Dum Dum DUMM!).
It is nice to reflect that somewhere in Okali, jackalopes thrive and are hopping about contentedly.
