Ron looked into Lavender's eyes after he broke their kiss. "Lav, we've been seeing a lot of each other," he started softly. "But we have to talk about things. You've been rushing into things all too quickly."
"Like how, Won Won?" Lavender's brown eyes looked into Ron’s blue ones. "I thought that you liked rushing into things."
"I don't, Lavender," Ron protested. "You like rushing into things."
Ron sat down on the couch in front of the fire place. This was going to be harder than he thought, but it had to be done. He kept seeing and hearing Hermione everywhere he went, no matter what he was doing. It was like Hermione was even haunting his dreams, and it was because he didn't ask her to the Yule Ball two years prior to their sixth year.
Lavender sat down beside him. "This is bad news, isn't it Ron?" she asked, uneasy as he sat in silence for a few moments.
"Lavender, I love you. But I don't love you in a romantic sense. I love you like an annoying sister,” Ron finally said. "We can't do this anymore."
"Are you saying that you want to break up with me?"
Ron stared into the fireplace for a moment, then looked over at her. "Yes."
Lavender’s eyes filled quickly with tears. "How can you do this to me, Ronald Weasley?! And with the spring formal so close! Who am I going to go with now?!" she practically screeched.
Ron thought for a moment. "Seamus. Or Neville," he suggested.
There were several moments of silence between the two, with Lavender silently sobbing. Ron hated to hurt people, but he knew that this relationship wouldn't work out. After Hermione had cast the canaries on him, he found out shortly after from Ginny that Hermione had, and always will, fancy him. She did that as a way to point out to him that he was being a down right git.
"I'm sorry Ron,” Lavender finally said. "I really am."
"I know you are, Lavender. I am too. But it's not you that I love anymore," he said, his chin in his hand as he watched the flames flicker in the fireplace.
Lavender raised an eyebrow. "Then who is it?" she asked, wiping away the last bit of the tears.
"Hermione," Ron said, hoping that she wouldn't break down in tears in front of him again.
Lavender felt so confused. Her first boyfriend had just broken up their relationship, and all because of that Ms. Know It All of Gryffindor. She wasn’t sure if she was hurt, or unloved; if she wanted to slap Ron across the face or hug him. She sat there, feeling the tears starting to well up in her eyes again. Shaking her head so slightly, she wondered why. Why her? Why Hermione? Why Ron broke her heart.
Ron was quite the looker. He was like candy for your eyes. No wonder he had the attention of all the girls. Handsome and athletic, as he was the keeper for their house's Quidditch team. With the sprinkle of freckles drizzled across his cheeks and nose, that bright red hair, his tall yet lanky build, and his eyes. "Oh his eyes," she thought to herself. Ron's eyes was the one thing that Lav had loved about him. She knew that things were never going to be the same.
Ron sat in silence, much like Lavender was doing. "You're heartbroken, aren’t you?"
"No, Ron," she snapped. "I'm not."
Ron looked over to the common room entrance which was swung open by Hermione, Harry, and his little sister, Ginny. He got up from his seat, and went over to the group.
"'Mione," he said softly.
"What Ronald?" Hermione asked, cocking an eyebrow.
"I just wanted to say...I'm sorry. I love you, Hermione," Ron confessed, pulling her close, making sure that Lavender was out of earshot and sight. He leaned in, and let his lips meet hers.
He thought that Lavender was out of sight, but she wasn't. She looked over to see Ron, the man that had just broken up with her, snogging Hermione. Hot tears rolled down her cheek, and she stood up and walked over to them.
"So this is it?!" she screeched, breaking the two apart from each other. "This is what you left me for?!"
Hermione gave Ron a puzzled look. "What's she talking about?"
"I'll explain later," was his response, as he walked Lavender back over to the couch.
After Lavender sat down, Ron sat down beside her. "Lavender, how are you really feeling?" he asked. He felt bad for what she just saw, but it had to be done.
"Hurt. Really, really hurt," she whimpered. "Angry. Unloved."
"I'm sorry,” he said, trying to be sincere. "I really am. But you and I both know that it wouldn't have worked out in the end. There's too many differences between us."
"Like what, Ron?" she asked, her tears still falling.
"We travel in different circles. You have your group of friends: Parvati, Padma, and Susan; I have Harry, Hermione, and Gin," he pointed out.
Lavender sat in silence, listening to his voice. It was so soothing to her, to hear her name, to think of him and her together, to remember their times together.
Lavender sighed. "I suppose you're right, Ron. I just...I wish that you didn't do what you did to me," she said quietly, getting up from her seat. "I guess I'll see you around, then."
"Yeah, you'll see me around. We'll still be friends, but Hermione's the one that I truly love,” Ron said, wanting to hug her, but refrained from doing so. "I guess I better get going to bed," he continued with a yawn, stretching.
She frowned slightly. "Good night, then."
"Night," was his response, heading up the stairs to his dorm that he shared with Harry, Dean, Seamus, and Neville.
