I wanted to ask something for so long but Ive always been worried about my inbox exploding with LOL and comments calling me an alien.

Why do Westerners write letters and post them to the departed? I understand the guestbooks at funerals but not the letters to the dead. Are the letters meant to be read by the family/fans, or is it just something people write to get off their chest or is it because the spirit would be able to read them?

I hope this doesn't come off as insulting - Ill admit, I am ignorant but I want to understand this.
