Nah they used to happen every year. They'd pop up every once in a while on Reddit but it really blew up 2016. The IT movie as a scapegoat helped make it mainstream though

I‘ve been watching/listening to her vids all afternoon and was so surprised when i saw this post. I also really enjoy her, she always talks about interesting stuff i‘ve never heard of or don‘t care about but she always makes it fun.

One time maybe 12 years ago my daughter and I were going for a walk down this very long, quiet street and there was no one else around, and a clown drove past (well, a person in clown makeup driving a car) and they were driving really slowly - probably looking for the address they were going to - and it was really unsettling.

Seeing clowns out of context is weird and creepy. I am always nervous looking out of windows at night as I half expect to see a clown just standing on the street looking back at me.
