Aaliyah staying power diminishes every year cuz you won’t put her stuff on streaming and are stingy with samples. It makes me sad. But her legacy complicated and idk how I feel about a lot her music anymore. But also she deserve her legacy and depraving younger generations of her music ain’t it.

Yet we can get 127 t-shirts using the same photos sold at Hot Topic / Forever 21 alongside a Funko pop but no represses of her albums on vinyl or at least her songs on streaming platforms? Okay, Barry.

Why is it that they haven’t released her stuff online?

Her uncle is a monster... he owns all her masters. Earlier this year the account for estate promised fans that her music would be released on streaming platforms this year but thing yet. Fans were thinking either her birthday in January or her death anniversary month in August but nothing.

Is there a reason why he got everything and not her mother or immediate family?

His label was notorious for shit contracts with his artist and refusing to release music. He's responsible for Jojo not making music for a long while. Um sure the contract gave him ownership of her masters. I truly believe he just gets joy from refusing to release her music.

I adore Normani, but is her team actually trying to claim that it’s NOT a sample??? Without the sample the song is literal dust. I’m….done 😂😂😂

Yeah, I think it's more her team... I watched her Zach Sang interview and she gets weird when talking about it.

Reminds me of the Sisqo Thong Song story, tbh. TL;DR - they thought the sample was cleared. It wasn't. Thong Song blew up. The Livin La Vida Loca songwriter got most of the profit from the Thong Song.

I feel like Thing Song royalties going to mostly to the Livin La Vida Loca writer is bullshit! Yes they deserved a substantial cut due to how simple the lyrics are but for comparison, Trinidad James only gets an 8% cut from Uptown Funk using his “dont believe me just watch line”

I really like aaliyah but for some reason I never really bothered to check her personal life story, i wonder why it was an uncle, not a sibling or parent that got the rights to her masters ( ... )

Her uncle is the CEO of Blackground records, which she was signed to. I'm sure it was in the deal she signed

I think given the amount that her record label, 5H fans, and even general pop fans were dogging her there was 0 way for her to ever be super popular or for her to have the confidence to do that.

I think Normani has a lot of support from celebrities and her label is putting some serious money right now. So I think there is a chance. The thing is, I have no ideia what is the Normani sound… what does she like, you know? I hope she is able to show it now.

Now, on a semi-related note, I feel like Chloe may be the pop girl coming for that spot. The girl is ambitious and you can tell she is always finding ways to showcase her talents and stay in people’s minds.
