Hi guys - when I was 19 years old, I decided to participate in a debutante ball in my hometown. The century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an unquestionably racist, sexist, and elitist past. I was not aware of this history at the time, but it is no excuse. I was old ( Read more... )

Well this is much less of a non-apology than what I was expecting

I'm surprised her apology actually acknowledges the racist and terrible past of the organization, especially since so many people were roaring in to defend how it actually isn't racist because it isn't "officially" the KKK. I expected a pretty big non-apology following the same lines.

That other post had me scratching my head. “technically wasn’t the KKK, so I don’t need to be ashamed to say I liked her in the Office and liked Kimmy Schmidt”

Can we get a round up of the people trying to say it wasn't with the KKK?

Right? They’d better be getting a big old Christmas bonus for this work.

Addresses the problem head on, acknowledges culpability, double points for saying age wasn’t an excuse not to be educated on the matter (but also cleverly keeps the excuse in the back of our minds just by mentioning it), ties it into structural inequality, even gets a bit meta about responding to criticism as a whole.

Overall, 9/10, a point off for the ‘these are the values I live my life by’ bit and the ever present ‘moving forward’.
Influencers take note.

The only positive outcome for this would be the workers getting a bonuses, I'm with you there lmao and maybe celebs realising they do need someone who actually knows what they are doing (and that they should pay them veeeery well)

There was a lot of "but the ball wasn't associated with the KKK!" going on.

lots of "well she wasn't in the literal KKK so I guess that means this ball isn't a racist institution"
