I have zero interest in seeing this, I don't think it's something I'll enjoy but I'll probably see it once it hits streaming. That said, and I don't care what anybody thinks about this, Hudson should get an Oscar nom for doing this. The bar for biopic depictions of huge stars with huge personalities and iconic voices was set to in the dirt by "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Rami Malek winning an Oscar for what was a made-for-TV movie and performance. So Hudson should get at LEAST a nomination for this.
looks like jennifer's acting has improved a lil bit
but this also looks like a boilerplate biopic. aretha deserved something that felt like more than just cosplay and hitting the musician life story plot points.
Apparently her family (minus her niece) are against this film, but they seem to be against any biopic of her. They didn't like the the show with Cynthia Erivo as Aretha either. I still wanna watch this though...
"ONCE AGAIN..... THE FRANKLIN FAMILY (DOES NOT) SUPPORT THE MOVIE THAT IS IN PRODUCTION!!!!! NOR DO WE SUPPORT THE BOOK “THE QUEEN NEXT DOOR”!!!!! NEITHER ENTITY FELT THE NEED TO CONTACT THE (CORE) FAMILY ABOUT ANYTHING!!!! HOW CAN YOU MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT A PERSON AND NOT TALK TO THE PERSONS SONS OR GRANDCHILDREN ABOUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION? HOW CAN YOU PUT A PERSONS FAMILY (IMAGE) IN A BOOK AND NOT ASK PERMISSION? IF YOU ARE A “REAL” FAN OF MY MOTHERS....PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS. ASK YOURSELF....WOULD YOU WANT THIS DONE TO YOU? (side note: the “ONLY” person my mother was in favor of for the movie was JENNIFER HUDSON. period. Everything else is being done against our wishes) (please share) THE “REAL” FRANKLIN FAMILY (sons and grandchildren)" - son, Kecalf Franklin
Yeah, how is it possible yo be "respectful" of the person the movie is about when the family is so clearly against it? And I don't blame them.
I feel like a really good quality documentary would be a better alternative, all Aretha clips and singing. But also not unless the family is involved and gives their blessing.
It definitely makes me question the decision to release the "Amazing Grace" documentary that Aretha spent years trying to keep from being released. The family allegedly allowed the documentary to be released only a year after her death.
