Madonna's brother wrote a tell all about her, and it was one of my more entertaining quarantine reads. He was still close with her during the production of truth or dare. He said that the film wasn't faked, but that a lot of it was definitely staged for dramatic effect. He mentioned that they did several takes when filming her visit to her mother's grave.
I liked his book a lot - it was a very interesting look into gay men’s life in 80s (and beyond) NY and a look into celebrity circles of the time. And it did highlight that a lot if talented little people were used up in the making of the Madonna legend.
it was really interesting to hear how madonna created her mythology. i love how he pointed out that madonna actually had a lot of connections & friends when she arrived in NYC. but during the like a virgin era she started saying "i moved to new york with $50 in my pocket and a dream..."
"We were at a test screening of the film. Harvey began to talk to her about his ideas for the film, and she just lays into him: 'Listen, I put up the money for this movie. I don't care what your point of view is. I never want to hear it. Who the hell are you to tell me what kind of film I should be doing? This is mine and Alek's. Shut up and I don't ever want to hear another one of your ideas about it.' He just crumpled."
Good for a woman to know her worth and that of her work. This is one of many reasons why teen me adored Madonna.
I remember seeing this and thinking she was such a cunt. But I loved her music so much. I'm glad she layed into Harvey. It was what he deserved/deserves
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I was about 12 when I first saw it and I watched it so many times. It was my first real exposure to LGBTQ people and left a lasting impression on me. Little did I know at the time I would come out 12 years later.
I loved Oliver and Niki and Donna and dreamed about being a glamourous backup singer one day (I had reasonable dreams). It's been years since I've seen it, but maybe I'm due for a rewatch.

Honestly, I think it worked because: Madonna. I think he'd have ignored it if it were anyone else
