i've often felt this way re: critical reviews of stories by women for women. male critics don't understand that the content is not for them. they don't know what it feels like to be a woman, or the subtleties and also complexity of their stories or lives, so they just write them off as superficial.

Or that a film covering a topic that has been done in a traditionally male format is considered “superfluous” or pandering to liberal feminists.

I remember people called “Black Swan” a “chick flick”.

I'm watching this right now and I liked Marie A and I didn't see why people were so angry about this film. But I went looking for reviews on Jupiter Ascending as I adore that movie and all I saw were dudes mocking it and Chris Stuckman's review just sticks in my craw. Because men are way harsher when it comes to movies that are made by women. They scoff as if it's lesser than and I know in the book, "Bitch" they talk about how men hate things that are made by women and wear it as this badge of honor to condemn the shit.

Jupiter Ascending is so bad that it’s funny though.

Female-led horror films is something that needs discussing. Especially remakes/sequels/reboots, like The Craft 2 (dir. Zoe Lister-Jones), Carrie (dir. Kimberly Peirce) and Black Christmas (dir. Sophia Takal and written with April Wolfe). I feel like these filmmakers are not given free reign to make the film they envision because these films are controlled by (mostly male) production companies.

Just wanted to say I worked with April Wolfe out of college and she is so lovely and funny. I'm really happy to see where her career is going.

Yhara Zayd has some great video essays on Jennifer’s Body and The Craft (really all her videos are so well written and interesting), I particularly like the Jennifer’s Body one that focuses on the way the studio totally mismanaged it’s marketing: https://youtube.com/channel/UCzuvcjgZyyMaO6gwidRT8GA
