I've always had a love-hate relationship with him and his work. One one hand, he fetished Black men in an extremely disgusting way, on the other he turned the salacious into art- I've seen prints of his work and he has a beautiful way with composition and framing a shot.

I’ve watched two docs on Mapplethorpe, the movie and a doc on Patti Smith was also a mini Mapplethorpe doc and .... meh

*whisper* I liked it.
Maybe just because I'd never seen anything like it. And parts of it were hilarious.
When I think of that guy in his John Philips drag, trying to drunkenly roller skate with his guitar...hilarious.

It was entertaining for sure but I found the whole glorifying the chaos and dysfunction of BJM as somehow being the pinnacle of artistic integrity and authentic incredibly irritating.
