It's a single narrative from point a to point b and it's obvious that the lead is an actor living an inauthentic experience when interacting with the actual nomads. The disparity feels clunky, almost improv.
Frances is strong, as usual, but there's no real "payoff". It should not have received anything for cinematography as it came off as someone's 1st professional film after film school.
Chloe Zhao being up for best director is valid, but I feel Regina's direction was stronger.
This is not a best picture worthy film.
That said, it is worth a watch.

Still vibrating with frustration over Minari's categorization of being a 'foreign' film. Side-eyeing how easily the white-lead production/filming/Asian fetishization for Memoir of Geisha easily got recognised as an American-made film in the 2000s versus Minari which got nitpicked to death for its cast and crewmembers and its production and, most importantly, its use of the language the cast would realistically use in this setting and story. Fuck thiiiis.
Edited to add the most important bit.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a post about it. I was actually shocked that with the talent involved and the subject matter that this shit would even be considered. I guess they've learned nothing from the Zoe Saldana mess ☹️
y’all’s favorite HBO show about Black ppl, Cthulhu and sundown towns (Yes its LC) participated in Black face, and colorism while BLACK actors watched it happen.
Gotta watch this whole video on Instagram because wow.https://t.co/F9NAl6dazY…

I agree that you think they would learn from Zoe Saldana but I can almost hear the producers going, 'Well if we use it on not a famous, well-paid actress we can get away with this!' and my soul continues to shrivel in disgust.
