Film Critics Have A Problem With "Malcolm & Marie"

it's one thing to have a ~mean/dumb movie critic~ character in your movie (we're used to it!) but it's another thing entirely to make a whole movie about how you got a bad review once and how that means nobody understands your art https://t.co/TzcYlsvQa3

Probably be more like Pieces of a Woman where Netflix just tries to push Zendaya for awards

Ooof slightly OT but that PoaW intro gave me like a sorrow attack. I was not ready for the howl of grief I let out.

It's harrowing. Kirby is amazing. And the nurse lady too.

Ok I really want to ask John David and Zendaya what appealed to them about this script...or if there like, was one.

Well the entire movie is just them monologuing and arguing, so they probably thought it would be their Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.

Zendaya produced it too, so she's all aboard the Sam Levinson train (no matter how douchey this 30-something white nepotism man is).

I googled him just to refresh my memory of his career and saw that he dated Ellen Barkin when he was 22/23 and they were together for several years. Good for her I guess? LOL IDK why that stood out to me more than what he's actually directed, but has to be good to have Barry Levinson as a father if you want to be a director.

Zendaya asked Sam to write a movie for her.

This sounds truly grating and the optics of having a white writer/director having his black character constantly rail against the white woman at the la times is...certainly something. if it helps sam levinson this black woman from nowhere completely agrees with the la times review of assasination nation (a truly irritating exercise in style over substance. much like sucker punch it was basically an hour and a half of a deeply deeply horny man trying to make a statement on feminism).

that being said i'm still going to watch it but i could tell from the trailer that this was going to be kind of whack.

I have never seen such an apt description of how I felt about sucker punch, lol

That's the plot, JD Washington's character is a director who just got a bad review and keeps complaining about it to his girlfriend, Zendaya. The characters are obviously stand-ins for Levinson and his wife, who are both white and Jewish. It's very blatant and so boring, meanwhile it's been promoted as like some Oscar vehicle for everyone involved.

LOL. I like both JDW and Zendaya, but nah, this sounds terrible. though I'm sure both Zendaya and JDW will get good reviews for their acting tho.

Good! Sorry for Zendaya and JDW, but everything I've seen about this looks pretentious, self-serving and masturbatory.
