the first time I saw the movie I thought I got it. then I read the director’s explanation.... :/ I’m going to stick with my own explanation.

I saw it as a time loop. He was meant to die (in his house, in the beginning), but he was knocked out of that reality. Because of that, a bunch of other people died instead (his mom, his younger sister, Gretchen..)

But then time looped over itself at the end. He died when he was supposed to, which made it so everyone else stayed alive. And since he was smiling right before he died, he knew what was about to happen, and that he had just saved them.

This director's cut is straight up garbage. Donnie Darko is one of the best examples of how a limited budget and studio interference can actually help a film's quality. Plus this movie would be nothing without the original, theatrical cut's soundtrack

The bit about his therapist prescribing placebos was a bit like... surely she would just lose her license?

Southland Tales showed that Richard Kelly is a hack tbh. The studio got lucky they interfered with Darko really.

I love this movie sfm. I remember randomly coming across it on TMN and then getting it on DVD. I usually watch it every October. The music is so beautiful and I love the story, even if it's confusing af.
