On a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Kelly revealed to her guest Jennifer Love Hewitt that people were jerks at "an awards show" just prior to the season one finale of American Idol. (She was definitely referring to the 2002 VMAs, which she attended alongside Justin Guarini and the AI judges ( Read more... )

It was cool to be make fun of pop stars back then. Which is sad because the people that mocked them were either just as manufactured, not as talented or just simply had no reason to care because they weren’t even in the same genre.

Avril was a little monster. She also referred to Kelly as "that bitch who copies me" in some interview, because Kelly did a photoshoot (and performed once) in a tie, like Avril did. But as Avril stans love to point out, Avril wrote Breakaway and let Kelly "have" it, and praised her rendition.

Avril was literally a kid during her nastiest era, and during a time when it was "cool" to act like that. Still, tho. What a brat.

Oh well in that case, Avril copied me. I was wearing my dad’s ties for a solid year before she came along. Then I stopped bc she made it popular and, just like Avril, I had some severe NLOG insecurities.

Not surprised. There was always high snobbery attitudes aimed at reality contest winners like AI.

Although I feel like shows like AI were not all that difference to the behind the scenes process other musicians faced when trying to get a record deal.

You’re still judged, sometimes made to change your whole look and sound etc…etc.

Yes, there is this idealized journey of being a garage band just getting 'discovered' and being perfect as they are but that pretty much never happens (although YouTube might have changed things a bit). I didn't get the hate for AI or others shows in general.

90s artists were the epitome of snobbery. Especially from the rock side of the things. It was very much “real artists vs manufactured artists”. But I feel like a lot of it was rooted in envy. The big popular pop stars got all the success and popularity whereas some of these bands/artists had success but not that monumental success.

Also they hated the male pop boys just cause they got more female attention for being more attractive lol.

I remember Lizzo countering that idealized journey by saying that that “overnight success” isn’t always truly out of nowhere but years of planning and plotting by artists and their people.

yeah even huge stars like Gaga and Britney whose debut seemed like an overnight success thing, both worked for years and years beforehand.

I just watched Jennifer Love Hewitt's episode of SVU "Behave" and she was so good in that episode! Should have gotten an Emmy nom for Guest Performance.

I feel like contestants on ANTM said the same thing happened to them when they tried to have modeling careers. People looked down on them because of them being on the show. I feel like Kelly should've gotten half of Katy Perry's biggest hits. I feel like they were meant for her voice and not Katy's but Kelly was def one of the first pop stars to talk about Dr.Luke being horrible.
