Thank you for this post. I just discovered my love for haunted house books recently. Mexican Gothic got me into it. I have The Haunting of Hill House available now...but no, I won’t watch the show lol. I don’t really like watching scary shit...just reading it.

I love watching horror, but in life I’m not the final girl at aaaallll.

Everything stresses me. And I don’t have the patience to deal with anything so - bye!

I'd like to read more YA or middle grade horror.

This is my weekly plea to please, if you can, read the Zom-B series by Darren Shan. It's about horror AND racism. If you want more straight horror that's needlessly convoluted but still pretty good, read Demonata.

I just ordered a couple YA horror for the library I work at. You would think more would be out but one that’s on my list to read is Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare

I read Gods of Jade and Shadow and Mexican Gothic and didn't get the hype of either. Gods was better, but far too linear. Mexican Gothic had a few good ideas but didn't delve into any of them?

Mexican Gothic borrowed a bit too much from its inspiration.

This is exactly the post I was looking for, thanks OP!

I've only come into liking horror in the last few years, I used to be such a baby but I always loved Southern Gothic which developed into a love of haunted houses. I'm a sucker for a horror that combines the supernatural and dysfunctional family dynamics
