I think he stepped away from the project before it was done filming, which is why Whedon finished it in the first place. Plus he's had years now to rethink on it and have new ideas, especially since he had the Whedon cut and the critical response to it to use as a guide on what not to do.

Yeah, I believe Snyder left the film in post-production when his daughter passed away so he could be with his family and grieve. I can’t say I’m a fan of his work, but to put so much of yourself into a project, choose to walk away, and to see it be mangled must be really hard to deal with, especially since the memories would be wrapped up within loss.
