Comic book people, is Yelena an interesting character?

Yeah, but she’s more of a villainous character there.

Yelena is super interesting, but she's not the "little sister" type that this film seems to want to turn her into. She was part of the Black Widow program after Natasha, and basically wants to prove that she's better, and get revenge on Nat for being a traitor.

Natasha's arc with her is trying to get her to understand that being the Black Widow (which is more of a general title in the comics as opposed to a personal moniker in the movies) is crushing and lonely and awful, and that Yelena doesn't really know what she's working toward or what she's giving up. But Natasha's morals are still skewed, so the way she goes about trying to guide Yelena isn't exactly the best.

She's meant to be a foil, not a legacy character like Kate Bishop is to Hawkeye or Sam is to Cap.

I never really liked Scarlett as Black Widow but they did that character dirty. This solo movie should have happened years ago.

It was supposed to happen in Phase 1 iirc, Ike Perlmutter said no because he didn't think a female-led movie would do well but Feige wanted to (as well as wanting Black Panther and Captain Marvel to happen sooner, but couldn't because of Perlmutter).
