I think back then an openly gay character on the hit franchise would have been too much for disney's standards. Also I remember when I watched it in high school we all knew he was gay, like a sort of of "Yeah who cares, no big deal" and iirc we all liked it? Like it's such a normal thing there was no issue or problem whatever to address it. Like it was so normal? Ah when life was easier

yeah ia, we all knew he was gay. even when they were pairing him with kelsi more in the third, it didn't come across as romantic it seemed like 2 people excited to have a new friend w common interests. i think kenny did a good job with showing it.

troy and gabriella didn't even kiss until the end of the second movie so its not like they were just hiding gay sexuality lol.

It made sense? Not all high schoolers were like gossip girl where everyone fucked each other.. Some knew they were gay and didn't come out of the closet, some where ~in luuuv but took months to kiss. It was probably the only realistic thing about those movies lol
