What is the obsession with black face? There's no excuse for any of these shows.

It follows the long established pattern of “boundary pushing” by non-black people - but especially white people - to find a minimally obfuscated reason to engage in anti-black racist behaviors ranging from “we can’t even sing the n-word if it’s in a song” to “it wasn’t black face, I just applied darker makeup” and the age-old “oh, it was just a joke!”

it was the height of the "we know it's offensive, but we don't mean it, we're just satirizing ignorant racists so it's okay!" era of comedies, and blackface is so widely reviled and recognized as wrong that it was the go-to for shock value

Comedians don’t like being told no on any subject.

And I bet no one asked the black leads on this show for their thoughts when they did this in the first place, right?

This. It was super awkward, especially since Drows are an "evil" race and evil races are rooted in racism.

As a white person, my feelings on it are conflicted bc part of me is going "It's a LARP-esque take on a fictional race and real people don't have that skin colour" and the other part is like "mmmm that's a bad take and I don't get to decide what" level" of dark colouring on a non-black person is still blackface "(idk if that makes sense, I'm having a hard time with putting my thoughts into words today)
