Also no one dumps on Ad Astra's box office because it was a critical success. It's at 84 on Rottentomatoes, most of the critics loved it. It was James Gray's biggest budget film because Pitt has wanted to work with him as an actor for literally decades. Gray made an art house indie on a big budget with a big name movie star. It was a story about fathers and sons and the audience expected a big sci fi movie.

Pitt produced Gray's The Lost City of Z, which he was set to star in back in 2009 when he optioned the book.

You should be able to tell by Pitt's filmography that he's not really interested in starring in films, he's happy with a supporting role, as part of the ensemble. He's also very active as a producer, which also shows what's important to him. Before I get attacked, I'm not a stan, these are just facts.

I'm curious, though, what are some example of him being bankable without a notable co-star? Interview had Tom Cruise, Troy came out at Orlando Bloom's peak, Oceans had Clooney, Thelma & Louise def wasn't about him even if he scene-stole, and that's pretty much all I know about his filmography, because I've never liked him.

I would agree for the rest of the movies but Troy was successful because of Brad’s ass. I do think that he makes a good supporting actor but who wants to see him in a leading role? I’m not.

Benjamin Button, Se7en, 12 Monkeys, and A River Runs Through It (on a smaller scale because it's a movie about fishing after all) all did well and rested on his name as the clear lead of the film.

I disagree with 12 Monkeys. That was a Bruce Willis vehicle and Brad had limited screen time as that crazy mofo. I have to admit it's one of my favorite Brad Pitt movies though, along with True Romance.

No. But the notion of a bankable movie star has been dying for awhile now.

Yup this. Do Will Smith and Tom Cruise if you want some devastating numbers.

I think it was actually established that Leo is like the last one left who can open a movie on name alone.

Not even Leo, he's had a lot of box office flops. Blood Diamond, J. Edgar, off the top of my head.

There is no one left who can truly guarantee box office. The studio system died a long time ago and along with it, the guaranteed box office.

I do wonder what people will got to the cinema for these days and what impact that has. Seems like maybe people only turn out for films that are better seen on the big screen but idk.

People currently only turn out for things/stories/properties they already know, that’s why the industry is pretty much based on remakes/reboots/sequels and not on movie stars anymore.
(Of course that sometimes there is original movies doing well, often thanks to a recognizable name attached somehow, but you can’t compare their numbers to the most popular films, etc)

I used to go to the movies once a week, even if there wasn't something I really wanted to see and now it's way more of a financial commitment than it used to be, so I only go for the "event" movies or anything I don't want to have spoiled. there are exceptions but that's it for the most part.

I used to be more like that but cinemas really need to advertise & invest in their subscription programs more before it’s too late. w/ A-list I’ll go see a lot of the smaller films I would have waited until steaming (or piracy lol) for if I have a random couple of hours free. I totally get why moviepass flopped lol but I’ve bought enough popcorns that AMC def still makes money off me. I’m surprised that I never see any advertising for it outside of touchpoints at the theater itself - it totally seems like the sort of thing they should have made a big fuss about gift subscriptions for over the holidays.
