The last major bushfire crisis was in 2009 and close to 200 people died. There was a lot of talk in the aftermath about changing the way emergency services communicated fire warnings to the public as well as educating rural home owners on what to do when bushfires approach their homes, and I believe that's why the death toll this time around is much lower.
This is excellent. I recently read about an Elder who was turned away by St Vinnies at one of the relief centres. Australias racism can't even stop during national crisis.
