Taylor Swift comments on artists choosing to release standalone singles instead of albums

Music Week asks Taylor Swift about trend in which artists opt to release standalone singles rather than an album:

"As long as people dropping just singles want to be doing that, then I'm fine with it, but it feels like a big general wave that's been pressured by people in power” pic.twitter.com/og3EiyldLt

I tend to like a full album. My faves Muse did a sort of spread out release of a few “singles” over the course of a couple of years but they ended up on an album (Simulation Theory). They’ve talked a lot about how the landscape is so different. It makes me sad because I feel like their albums are usually pretty good in full so I hope they don’t eventually stop releasing a full work.

I'm so happy to see Muse mentioned! I've been following them for a long time now and I definitely don't see them as being streaming artists in the vain of some of their younger contemporaries. Especially because their albums are more of a package that make up a whole. Simulation Theory, for example (love love love this album) would be much less exciting as *just* standalone singles. The entire album itself is a listening experience that should be had.

Yessssss!!! I also was impressed how they worked the stand alone singles into the overall tapestry of the whole ST album (which I also loved)!

I mean for my faves I still prefer a full album

For people like Katy Perry I’m fine with just a bunch of good singles (not that I found any of those three very good lol)

“Harleys in Hawaii” grew on me, a lot.

I kinda agree with her about it being higher ups making those calls for some artists.

Katy on one hand I feel is mostly testing the waters to see what works with her. And a lot of that is because she’s lost a certain level of status and popularity. Her lack of growth is part of reason.

I’ve always appreciated musicians like Adele, Beyoncé, and Taylor for being album-orientated. Bey being the most exciting of the 3 for me.

I just miss when songs were like four minutes long.

I KNOW

music under 3 minutes doesn't feel like nearly enough to me

I remember people complaining that Sign of the Times (Harry Styles) was too long and I’m like umm that song has some issues imo but the length is not the biggest one. I get so bored by ringtone songs where it’s just a hook and then a sped through, noncommittal verse/bridge-ish thing.

i miss the days when an artist would release an album, and they'd have like 4 to 8 singles!
And they'd pimp out each one with time and finesse.

I know it can't work the way it once did tho.

I mean, Janet had like 8 singles alone from Rhythm Nation.

Your comment made me realize that I miss the days when you had to wait to hear that new sound from that new album, because you knew you were going to get at least five singles out of it. There would be this really thoughtful and exciting feeling about hearing the songs for the first time, rather than hearing artists workshop them with their fans in real time. It’s probably why I appreciate Beyoncé and (now) Rihanna’s (and, even though I’m not a fan, Taylor’s) approaches.

But I’m relatively old, as far as pop culture marketing is concerned.

With matching grand music videos for each single! Those were the days.

Lmao and when most of the album was a single at some point. Both Janet and Shania were good for that.
