The Great British Bake Off Final!

Oct 30, 2019 20:43

The Great British Bake Off celebrated the final episode of Season 10!

Bakers had to make a chocolate cake signature bake, cheese soufflés for the technical, and a picnic illusion, where cakes and biscuits were made to look like other food.

I don't like some of the choices they've made since going to Channel 4 but this season really highlighted them ( ... )

Yeah the whole exploiting Alice's parents' flight thing felt very reality show like (personally I was reminded of Germany's Next Topmodel as a German because they pull this 'oh so and so's family couldn't come visit' thing every time).

And yes to the technicals being way too hard. I get that there's a higher standard and they can't just make a scone but some of them where all the bakers failed were just way too hard and the instructions way too little.

Also the ridiculous themes. You can repeat challenges and themes you know. Dairy week was a joke as was 20s week.

ITA. It feels a bit more intrusive this series compared to previous/the BBC years.

Love this show. David was cool I guess. I wanted Steph to win but David was consistently in the top 3 so I am happy for him.

My big complaint tho is the technicals and some of the other challenges have gotten TOO HARD. I don't want to see people fail, I want to see gorgeous bakes! Make them less complicated so the bakers aren't killing themselves.

David deserved it this episode. He kept his calm and was on top throughout the episode. I felt very sad for Steph and Alice having such breakdowns.

That said: They never should have let Michael, Henry and Helena go. Especially Helena was totally undeserved.

I hope they learn from this and GBBO goes back to its wholesome roots instead of disliking colour of bakes or being unnecessarily mean. I miss Mary Berry.

EDIT
Oh one thing I did like better were the friendships this season. Dan from last year is such a bitch to everyone on twitter and Rahul seemed very left out of everything because people hated him for being the favourite and having anxiety about his bakes even though they were nearly always good. At first I thought Dan was funny and I get that he felt let down by the producers in a private matter and faced homophobia online but don't let it out on the other candidates.

Agreed on Dan, quite a few times this season he posted that he thought the wrong person was being sent home or that certain people were getting preferential treatment. Not nice for the bakers to read from the public let alone from someone who has actually been on the show, he should know better.

He was also shading Rahul on the Topless Baker podcast last year for getting more time in the finale when his glass broke or something. And he's always saying how the bakers in his year aren't close and making "subtle" remarks about them.

Yeah if he likes someone he's always like: Ignore the haters on twitter! I was fighting everyone even if they didn't tag me.

And then he says himself that someone should go home and still fights people on twitter. Honestly for a grown man and father embarrassing.

Rahul seemed meshed in with most of the other bakers though, he definitely showed up on the post show segments with a bunch of them, but I think some of the online fan reactions to him were weird. Not everyone can have a pat little complete arc of low self esteem to staggering self sufficiency over the course of 1 season of a baking show. His personality was kind of diffident, but his baking was good and he seemed nice. Dan seemed to be the only one no one was in contact with.

I didn't really like Steph for most of the season, but I felt vvv bad for her that she bottled it right at the end, she really should've won. It was nice that David won but he's not an iconic or interesting winner really, he was a bit boring.

This season has been less fun than previous seasons I think. The bakers were overall less skilled, but also the challenges were way harder which just makes things stressful, which isn't the point of bakeoff!!! Also, why was p much everyone so young and photogenic, and also more white compared to previous seasons? I want more old grannies and strange niche creative bakers, more diversity and fun. It is still a CRIME that the Halloween Queen Helena left when she did, what a load of bollocks.

Also NGl Sandy and Noel annoy me, their schtick isn't funny, and they aren't as lovely as Mel and Sue. It's more ~~~quirky and less comfy.

Didn't really warm to anybody in particular this year. I think the whole thing has become so stressful that it's affected the atmosphere in the tent - it's showing on the bakers and they all feel tense as opposed to the jolly fun of previous years, there's less room for their personalities to shine through.

Which is down to the challenges getting over complicated/too tightly timed and the lack of a more positive counterbalance in the critique. I don't dislike Prue, but she's not enough of a contrast to Paul the way Mary was.
