In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Busy Phillips and her husband Marc Silverstein open up about their 12-year marriage and how it has evolved since they became parents. Busy and Marc are parents to daughters Cricket Pearl, 6, and Birdie Leigh, 11.
There was time when divorce was on the table and Busy wasn’t happy with the division of labor concerning parenting duties.
“Marc was like, ‘I’ll do anything.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, then do everything. Because I have done it all, all by myself, and I’m done, dude..I was fully out the door,” Philipps admits. “I wasn’t expecting anything from him, but what we ended up doing was creating our own system.”
This wasn’t the first time Busy has talked about difficulties in her marriage. Back in 2018, Busy revealed in another interview with Parents magazine that her husband was not on board with the couple having a second child.
“He was not understanding how to be a dad and, in fact, didn’t try. I was parenting by myself,” Philipps said. “When I told him I wanted to have a second child, he said, ‘Fine, but it’s all on you.’ That was so heartbreaking.”
Silverstein said that he felt “inadequate” in taking care of the girls and he felt it was better to stay away. And after going to therapy, he decided to stay home and take care of the girls. He says that he has a better relationship with them.
