A lot of people use social media as a platform to speak out. Even when they lack basic knowledge or understanding of the subject.

Yup, it's what makes social media unbearable for me at times...being exposed to uneducated, ignorant opinions on literally anything and everything.

Yea sometimes social media makes me hate people as a whole lol. Like the people I follow on instagram are fine, but reading the comments they get on any even semi political post is frustrating. It really makes it seem like the average person either only believes what they want to believe no matter how many facts they are given, or is too stupid to ever understand most things, including what's good for their own well being.

I'm so glad myspace and facebook became big just after I finished high school. I think if I had it during, I would've been more depressed and angsty than I already was. I think the concept of social media is inherently good (keeping in contact with people and sharing your life with friends and family you don't see often) but people are trash and we ruin everything.

I think about deleting all my social media all the time, but then I would feel more isolated than I already am (just moved to a new country and don't know many people). Right now I feel like it's a necessary evil, I only use facebook messenger and instagram now. But even then I limit my use and only follow people I know and harmless gardening instagrams. I'm too weary to follow anything else.

Myspace was around my last years of high school but I honestly don't remember anyone being on it. And Facebook became a thing my first semester of college and hardly any schools were even on it yet.

Social media has definitely been used for radicalization and as a way of connecting white supremacists to one another. I know it's used for good things too but until the people who run sites like Facebook and Twitter are willing to kick off Nazis and racists instead of bleating about "free speech" then it's not been a good invention.

Also, does anyone know any country that has really lax immigration laws? Asking for a friend who doesn't want to take a round of bullets when I'm she's out buying fucking milk

Also, my mom got banned from Facebook for three days for calling a guy an asshole after he went on a racist rant against Mexican immigrants (which she is). It's so terrible to just think about that...the dude was fine in calling her and the majority of her family and friends animals but she's banned and not him.

Given it's given a global platform to right wing ideas and United racists and pedos and trash humans. Me too sis. Also social media is full of lies. It does good too for sure but the amount of evil and horrible sociopathic people finally getting a voice makes me hardly follow anyone other than family (even they're idiots).

So me too sis. I wouldn't let my kids near social media.

sorry to be all doom and gloom lol but social media, while fairly shitty, isn't even in the top five of the challenges humans who are little kids today have to worry about

that said, i do get it. if i had kids i'd have strict screen time rules for as long as humanly possible and hammer in infosec and anonymity knowledge they'd hopefully be mindful of for when they inevitably started to defy my draconian regime.
