The United States neeeeeeeeds a robust and reliable rail system! It's like unless you're traveling from DC to one of the nearby cities Amtrak doesn't even know you exist. There isn't even a train between Nashville and Atlanta, two major cities that are a 4 hour drive apart. I looked it up recently and to make that trip using Amtrak I'd have to first ride a bus that doesn't accept large bags to Birmingham then ride to Atlanta for a 12 hour total trip. Of course people are just going to drive or take a plane at that point.

I lived in Lancaster PA for a while, and to take amtrak from lancaster to DC, I had to stop in philly. The train is really only functional if you are going from DC to philly/nj/ny. There was some issue going to NY from lancaster, too. I remember we had to drive to trenton nj to get nj public transport to amtrak to NYC.

The only other place train travel is reliable in the US is the pacific NW.

The train between Detroit and Chicago isn’t terrible. I used to take it when I was in college.

I used to do Milwaukee to Grand Rapids, too. It was tolerable.

We need this so bad. I have a coworker that's afraid of flying, but has to travel up north frequently. It takes her TWO DAYS (versus a 1.5hr plane ride) because she has to go to DC first, have a long ass layover, then travel overnight to her final destination. It's ridiculous.

lmao i grew up with those people and i never learned how to drive. christ the shit I heard! "how are you going to get around??? are you going to rely on people to drive you???" they had never fucking heard of taking the bus before and when I kept bringing it up (and continued to take the bus) they would just bleed from their ears.

I wish Canada and the US would join forces and go HAM on building railway infrastructure. I looooove to travel by train. We could make it way more environmentally friendly.

Seriously, when I go to the UK I can take a train anywhere. A few years ago I visited London, Wick, Edinburgh, Holyhead, and Dublin, and I got TO ALL OF THOSE PLACES by train save Holyhead-> Dublin, which was a ferry ride.

Yet in the US I can’t visit my boyfriend who lives an hour and a half away without taking my car?

It’s so ridiculous. A legit rail system here would be so great.

i live on a relatively small island and even THAT is only covered by the railway on like one tiny part. the rest you can barely get buses to at decent intervals either. public transport needs a serious boost in general.
