They can think they still have a role up until the moment they don't. Pierce Brosnan was on the phone with his agent and the producer negotiating a new contract when the producer pulled the plug and went with Daniel Craig instead. Brosnan was blindsided, he had no idea the role wasn't still his.

Well he was negotiating a new contract, that sounds like things are still up in the air? Nothing is final until that contract is signed. Would that even be considered "blindsided"?

I think Brosnan would say he had been negotiating in good faith, meaning that he believed they had offered him the role and they were talking terms at that point. But that wasn't the case. They had obviously also made an offer to Daniel Craig and were talking terms with him while also negotiating with Bronsan. That's not negotiating in good faith. That's why he would consider himself blindsided.

Brosnan probably thought if they couldn't come to terms, then Craig would be next on their list, but not simultaneously. Really, the way they did it is not the way it's usually done. There is a protocol.
