With Around 90% of Female Screenwriters Writing Korean TV Dramas, Does It Pass The Bechdel Test?

In Korea the number of female TV screenwriters is close to 90%. In contrast, only 27% of all U.S. network directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and photography directors are women.

Right now I'm watching One Spring Night, Abyss, Perfume, My Absolute Boyfriend and Angel’s Last Mission: Love. But of all of those I only like OSN and ALM:L, the other three I watch them out of boredom. I plan to start WWW too.

I'm SOOOOOOOO tired of the destiny thing in kdramas. I don't want the leads to have known each other when they were kids and then casually met again as adults but they don't recognize each other until everything is revealed in a really dramatic way, it doesn't make it more interesting, just makes it more ridiculous. It happens in so many kdramas that is faster to count the ones that it doesn't that the ones that it does.

And I also want to say that I think even though the plot of Her Private Life was really boring the main couple must have been one of my favorites of all times. They talked to each other and fix things without making much of a mess and the romantic scenes... oh damn.

omg yes, i HATE when they make it a child connection. it especially made me lose my shit on what's wrong secretary kim? bc they even had the kids promise to marry each other skdsjdjks
i read somewhere that koreans really like the whole ~~first love thing and that's why this trope is so popular

The destiny thing is such a cop out sometimes to not have to develop the relationship as much. It's sooooooo annoying. When it's done right, fine, but they use it so much that it's just like whatever now and lacks impact most of the time. Like, no, their love isn't that ~deep~ just because they met as kids.

I love South Korea sfm. Massively patriarchal values have a long way to go but it’s still one of the greatest countries in the world 🇰🇷

That's cool to hear, I know you mentioned living there for a bit when you were younger.

Hopefully it changes, a lot of Korean feminists are pushing the needle further and there was a feminist novel that caused a lot of discussion.

can I ask the name of this novel? is there a translation?

Kim Ji Young, Born 1982.

It sold over a million copies, there's not an English translation out yet :(

There is a film about it coming out next year, so hopefully that does something since big stars (Gong Yoo/Jung Yu Mi) are starring in it a la Silenced (That led to actual systematic change). Hopefully second time's the charm!!

lets see if this post will be lowkey racist like the last post about high heels in japan. so many ridiculous generalizations and pontificating from western ontd users as if the us and europe don't have their own sexist bullshit that dominates culture in different ways.

i used to watch so many more kdramas than I do now - i'm so picky now! i don't have any other thoughts to share besides i am loving how couples get to actually fuck now. watching 24 episodes of goong for like one one minute makeout on a bed vs. things like hwayugi (SO MANY HOT MAKE OUTS) and Something in the Rain (they have sex in like the THIRD episode omg!) has made me happy, lol. I will say I prefer dramas where the couple faces adversity together as opposed to dramas where they are constantly at odds, if that makes sense. I really enjoyed 90% of both Something in the Rain and Hwayugi for different reasons - Hwayugi was hilarious, Something was adorable and really nailed the regular relationship moments.

I must have missed that post but I'll take your word for it. Hmm, different cultures equals different ways they deal with certain situations. East Asia is predominately embedded in Confucius values, but change is slow and steady.

i feel like something in the rain was the exception tho, from what i've seen most dramas still won't have the couple have sex or they'll do it till the end, but at least the era of dead fish kisses is dead lol

I hate dead fish kisses, like I can't. Master's Sun a drama I love had those kisses and I was like huh??

From the clips I've seen, it seems like network tv is slowly getting a bit cable esque w/ their skin-ship/kisses.

the last k-drama i watched was strong woman Do Bong Soon, but I got annoyed by the typical love triangle and how shitty the MC's mother was. Loved her outfits tho.

I love Strong Woman, I didn't mind the love triangle. I was rooting for the cop for most of it tbh, but the rich CEO won me over completely eventually. He was just so nice. The only thing that is bad about Strong Woman imo is the weird homophobic subplot with the doppelganger, like I still didn't get what the hell that was

That one fell off the rails omg the side plots were also insanely stupid and a waste of time. I forwarded like 70% of the later eps. The couple was sooo cute tho omg i was obsessed
