The great reviews for Booksmart have me curious, but all of the promos make it look like it's literally just gender-swapped Superbad. I'll probably see it, but I might just be comparing both movies the whole viewing.

I love Woodstock, but I've already seen like three docs on the festival (plus Taking Woodstock). I think I'll wait a while to watch the new one.

How is Booksmart compared to other coming of age films like Lady Bird?

It is kind of funny though if you use Instagram the ads they run have Billie Lourde's character up front and the two main girls are barely noticeable in the back. I get that she's probably the biggest name but it's kind of ridiculous.

It's kind of hard to compare to Lady Bird, because the tone is so different - Booksmart is a lot more madcap and zany, imo. I think it depends on what you like - Lady Bird remains my #1, but I can see how if you didn't love that one, you might really enjoy Booksmart precisely because it's such a different approach to similar material.

It’s more Clueless/Can’t Hardly Wait/Superbad with a sprinkle of Edge of Seventeen and Eighth Grade than Lady Bird. It has that same kind of...precociousness (not the right word, or most complimentary word, but it fits) as Lady Bird but it’s a little more raunchy, more hip, and more of an comedy.

It’s like the sweet spot between Lady Bird and Blockers from last year
