The whole AI thing they're doing with Chucky feels a lot more contrived than just having him being possessed by a serial killer...

I happened to catch the first film the other day and I was surprised at how tame it was.

i just can't get into chucky without brad's voice attached no matter how much i enjoy mark. and i hate having aubrey as the mom knowing she'll just inevitably die, i'd much rather her playing some kind of tiffany-esque chucky groupie

The mom didn't die in the original though, and it's even confirmed in Curse of Chucky that not only is she STILL alive but that she was still with Chris Sarandon's character after 20ish years.

oh wow i totally misremembered the original. if the mom doesn't die in the remake i vote nobody believes the doll thing and andy gets locked away/killed for being a murderer so aubrey goes full-on jason vorhees' mom in the sequel to keep trying to perpetuate the doll story
