History -- aka "his story". Nobody gave a shit about women and men were too mortified to ever admit that they were bested in their own field of expertise by a bunch of silly rogue housewives. My high school history teacher pointed this out in the very first class. He was also so outrage at how colonialists consistently gloss over the fact that they've been committing genocide of every single religion and culture they come across that is not their own.

These two concepts completely changed the way I saw the world, and for that I will always be grateful to him.

I'm a total history nerd and actually got into it through the American Girl doll books of the 1990s and kid biographies of women. That's had a lasting effect on me and it makes me sad that the history that is so often taught neglects anyone who wasn't a (powerful white) dude.
