she and director Marielle Heller had different creative opinions
OP it wasn't Marielle Heller who fired her, it was the original director Nicole Holofcener!
Also I did not know this! I'm glad to get the deets, I remember when it was announced she left due to "creative differences" that people were speculating her husband had an affair and she left the movie to try to work on her marriage. Shows how much we know!

it's funny how people jump to those conclusions toward women in Hollywood. How dare there be creative differences! My boyfriend works in publicity and the amount of BS that gets put in the media is funny. There's so much shit in Hollywood that goes down but there are so many NDAs. nnn, random but he's been emailing Meryl Streep back and forth for some publicity stuff.
i couldnt imagine marielle heller firing anyone let alone julianne moore. i was also confused how julianne kinda just threw her under the bus like that, but then read your comment and realized she wasnt talking about marielle ooop..

lmao why is this always the default thought when women eave a project in Hollywood?
I haven't seen Can You Ever Forgive Me, but I'm curious as to how Julianne's concept of the character differed from that of Nicole's if, as appears to be the case, Melissa's portrayal was in line with what Nicole wanted from the character.
Nicole left the project as well. Marielle Heller directed the movie which means whatever Nicole wanted from the character was not in line with anyone. I mean to fire Juliane Moore amidst pre production is quite an arrogant move.
When I lived in Boston, there was this woman who was always working out of the Starbucks in Brookline when I was doing the same thing. She looked remarkably like Julianne Moore. She was always having these intense phone conversations with someone who could have been an agent. My friend and I finally concluded that she was just an ordinary person a little off her rocker, but there's a 20% it was the real Julianne.
I finally saw this movie and I loved it! It made me want to read the book it’s based off of, and I’m a lazy piece of shit when it comes to reading. Melissa’s acting translates well into drama/serious roles.
