i don't think it's 'identify politics' so much as in the 1970s/1980s/1990s, we used to assume that anyone who had romantic relationships with the same sex was gay, even if they also had romantic/sexual attraction to the opposite sex sometimes. i just think bisexuality wasn't acknowledged as an option very much
