Those comments from Michelle Rodriguez don't surprise me. During my interview with her and the cast of WIDOWS, she and Erivo discussed that scene b/w Viola and Liam.
The shit poor Viola has to suffer through with during press tours, JFC.
She's definitely right about that undercurrent running through Widows. [Spoiler (click to open)] At first you think Viola and Liam's characters have the perfect family, and then you see how when shit got bad he had a backup white family ready to go. It's very interesting because I've seen that dynamic portrayed before where the focus is on sexism, but in Widows it had that added element of racism. Like when their son died she was forced to handle it because she can't just walk away from the fact that she is black, but Liam's character could and did and in such a cowardly way too.
That's why I loved Widows even though the plot made no sense the more you thought about it.
Yes. The way the director angled the interracial relationship was brilliant and not heavy handed. We GOT IT by towards the 2nd act. Especially with his relationship with his son.
